The Foundation & Framework of Reality
To the Called Out Ones of Jesus Christ (and all those seeking the True Substance of things),
What is reality? We live in a battlefield over the very nature of reality. Some say there are no absolutes that even things in the physical realm are simply constructs of the mind. Others say that it is only the physical realm that is real, that only things that can be scientifically observed and measured are the basis of reality and everything else is merely conjecture or superstition.
What is reality? This is, of course, a very important question for all people. But, I believe, it is especially critical for Christians to know the answer to this and to be able to intelligently articulate it.
In this age of relativism and blurring of reality we need to know what and in WHOM we believe, not from a sentimental “spiritual” perspective but from a basis of intelligent study and consideration.
Someone who has faithfully demonstrated this over the last 50 years is Dr. Dallas Willard, who was not only a minister of the Gospel but a Dr. of Philosophy and at one time, chaired the department of Philosophy at the University of Southern California. He was renown in both the field of theology and philosophy. Listen to one of his statements concerning reality:
“One who hears God’s voice is operating from the very foundation and framework of all reality, not from the fringe.” Dallas Willard, Hearing God
Dallas affirms the historical position of the Christian Church and the bible that says that not only is God the ultimate reality; He is the creator of reality itself. And, that, not only did God create the world / universe by His words but they are still being held together by those same words. His Word is the foundation and framework of reality.
This is the Truth presented by the Apostles in the Gospels and Epistles:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:1-3
“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. Hebrews 1:1-3 (see also 2 Peter 3:1-7)
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:15-17
These truths are critical and foundational. These verses clearly state that God is the great “reality.” Nature itself, including all its “laws” – in its most comprehensive and scientific definition – is made, and held together by God.
But this not something the devil or those follow him want people to know or believe.
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. … So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:4-6; 18.
Notice it says, “we fix our eyes” not, “we close our eyes in blind faith.” No, we, with eyes wide open see beyond the temporary visible world around us and into the eternal, invisible realities presented (declared and taught) to us by the One who made them.
The things that we (scientists included) are learning about the nature and power of sound and things like string theory are consistently pointing to an “intelligent power” behind the origin of life and the universe. The bible has proclaimed this from the beginning – “In the beginning God…” Genesis 1:1.
Let us not retreat from our confidence in the Truth. The world is desperately seeking and needing to know the Truth as it is in Jesus, including the fact that it is the power of His Word that created and holds together the vast universe, including our lives, if we will allow Him to do so. (see Matthew 7:24-25)
Let me close with a Psalm of David that so beautifully states these profound truths.
For the sake of the world and the glory of God,
Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;
it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
Praise the Lord with the harp;
make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully, and shout for joy.
For the word of the Lord is right and true;
he is faithful in all he does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of his unfailing love.
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
He gathers the waters of the sea into jars[a];
he puts the deep into storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the people of the world revere him.
For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.
